Falling From the Sky Book Blitz

Falling From The Sky

Release Date: 02/21/14

Summary from Goodreads:

All stability in sixteen-year-old Ridge McCoy's life crashed and

burned in the plane crash that killed his dad. This summer-long basketball camp

is his chance to improve his skills and escape his problems back home. But his

summer plans take a turn in an unexpected direction when he meets Micah

Youngblood, the guy who runs the carousel at the local mall and has a

reputation for devouring straight boys' heterosexuality for breakfast,

alongside his chocolate chip pancakes.

Ridge needs a way to avoid the guys at camp, whose only quest for the summer is

to drown in beer and hook up with girls. So when Micah offers to explain how

the ten unique horses on the carousel are significant to his tribe, Ridge takes

him up on it. Still, Ridge can't decide if this is a bad thing or not. All he

knows is that he hasn't felt this alive since his dad fell from the sky, and as

the horse adventures come to an end, Ridge finds himself falling as well – for

Micah.

Excerpt 1

He reaches an arm out from under the towel and grasps my forearm. He pulls me closer to him, and everything in my brain says to fight him off, but my body screams out for him to just hold me close to him and not let me go. His other hand brushes over my bare shoulder, and I glance toward the sky to avoid eye contact with him. I see the towel fall from his shoulder out of the corner of my eye, and I know he’s inches away from pulling his bare chest against mine.

In this second of almost touching, I realize that falling for Micah – or any guy for that matter – will be a thousand times worse than falling from the sky. I have a girlfriend, and never in my life have I been attracted to a guy. At least not before now. No one has ever gotten to me like Micah does. His hands run along my arms, and I take the chicken way out.

“Will you jump with me?” I spit the words out quicker than I process them in my head.

Micah pulls back and inhales deeply. He’s not smiling with excitement or dragging me to the top of the bridge. He just stares at me with those sad puppy dog eyes filled with disappointment. He almost had me, and he knows it. That’s the point of a toxic green elephant – everyone sees it, but no one talks about it. However, he’s not talking at all, and the hurt in his eyes actually hurts me in return.

I look back to the bridge so if those brown eyes of his start pouring, I won’t see the raindrops. His hands leave my arms, and he steps beside me. He’s in my peripherals, but I don’t dare turn my head. It looks like he’s staring at the bridge, which means he’s either debating jumping with me or he’s refusing to look at me for the same reasons I won’t look at him.

“You sure you’re brave enough?” he asks.

I nod, even if he isn’t looking. “Yeah. As long as I don’t have to jump alone,” I say.

“If you jump, I jump,” he replies.

I really wish this hadn’t made me laugh. “Did you like Titanic?”

He laughs too, and I feel a world better. “I admit, I did…except for when Jack died. I mean, I get that it kind of made the movie, but I prefer happy endings.”

Hopefully this falling from the sky experience will have a happy ending for me, as in not smashing my head against a rock or drowning or being eaten by an alligator. Now is a good time to let my “what if” scenarios play out, and it’s an even better time to talk myself out of this.

I look over at Micah to suggest my many wild reasons on why I shouldn’t jump, but he’s smiling. Damn it. Why does he have to smile and actually want to jump off a bridge?

Being Hartley Book Blitz

Being Hartley

Release Date: 11/2013

Summary from Goodreads:

Fifteen-year-old Thea Wallis was born to entertain. Her mother, Oscar winning actress Cassie Hartley, thinks differently and has kept her daughter out of the spotlight since day one. Coming from showbiz royalty, it hasn't been easy to go unnoticed, but mismatched surnames, a family home in Tasmania and a low-key scriptwriter father has made this possible.

Just like her cousin Rory on the hugely popular TV show Saturday Morning Dance, Thea loves to dance. She learns the show's routines off by heart each week, despite her mother's attempts to convince her that dentistry would be a far more fulfilling career choice.

However, when Rory goes off the rails in LA, Thea's mother is suddenly left with no choice at all – Rory needs them and to LA they must go. Within forty-eight hours, Thea finds herself a long way from Tasmania and living her dream – on the road to Las Vegas with the Saturday Morning Dance team.

It doesn't take long before Thea's talents are discovered and she's offered everything she's ever wanted on a plate, including the dance partner she's had a crush on forever. But, as her mother has always told her, Hollywood dreams come at a price. Thea soon realizes she will have to work out just how much she's willing to pay. And, ultimately, discover her own way to be Hartley.

(Description source: Goodreads)

Eila Walker knows luck is not a friend, so she is downright shocked to inherit a million-dollar Cape Cod home. And yeah, her new town isn't perfect: the cheerleaders are heinous clones, the local undertow can kill ya, and her Great Grams was supposedly fried by lightning in the harbor square. Still, Eila is hopeful her luckless days are in the past . . . until history decides to repeat itself.

When drool-worthy Raef O’Reilly becomes her friendly, yet weirdly protective shadow, Eila thinks life is pretty darn perfect – until she is hauled beneath the waves by an unnatural undertow. Revealing coal-black eyes and iron-like strength as he rescues her, Raef can no longer hide what he is . . . or what she can do. Eila, last of her kind, can supposedly channel the power of human souls, while Raef is more adept at stealing them. Even worse, the legend about her ancestor isn't such a myth, since Eila’s grandmother was one kick-butt warrior until her lightning-like power backfired. A power that is written all over Eila's DNA.

Determined to stay one step ahead of a dangerous clan that is hunting her, Raef, along with three unlikely allies, will do all they can to protect her. But as hidden pieces of their brutal histories unravel, Eila begins to understand just what went down in the harbor square.

She soon realizes that following in her grandmother’s fearless footsteps may be the only way to save those she loves . . . including Raef.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eila is new to Cape Cod, having mysteriously inherited a mansion that once belonged to her ancestors. She makes fast friends with some people and definitely notice how good the new guy Raef looks. But things aren't exactly as they seem - Eila's luck could never allow that...

At first, aside from dealing with a mean girl, Eila's life in the Cape is pretty good, apart from a few strange happenings, until the undertow almost claims her as a soul-less being drags her down. Raef saves her life and then proceeds to turn it upside-down by revealing an old truth about her heritage.

Eila and Raef, yeah they're supposed to be natural enemy - her channeling souls and him stealing them, instead, though, he and a few of her new friends are protecting her and helping her figure out exactly what happened to her powerful great, great (etc) grandmother back in 1850.
Eila soon learn that to save everyone, she may have to figure out how to harness her powers and follow grandma's example.

Eila was a character who I both liked and disliked. It was cool the way she would stand up to Nikki and how she was quick with a come-back. However she did seem a little melodramatic to me, accepting things rather quickly as the undeniable truth without giving herself any substantial time to think it through, her thoughts would leap from thing to thing and she would be laughing like hell while thinking really negative thought.
She also fell into things quickly, her feelings for Raef were very insta-love-esque while she didn't seem to really learn anything much about his personality and his likes and dislike aside what what she observed.

Raef is friendly and incredibly good-looking whilst seeming to be unreadable, Kian is sarcastic and arrogant, Ana keeps everything close to her chest and M.J. is sweet, goofy and optimistic (M.J. was probably my favourite character).
Each character has secrets and mystical truths that are revealed throughout the duration of the novel. I do wish there had been a little bit deeper character development.

Shock factor was my favourite aspect of this novel, when something would suddenly happen that you don't expect and will open the doorway to the next part of the novel in a memorable way.

The paranormal in this novel was different to what I have read before, though with similar elements. There is mystery, intrigue, strange happenings and a smattering of clues to be pieced together. Danger is rife for these characters and events conspire to set the characters against a time to learn everything they can about what happened back in the 1850's, which we learn from Elizabeth's perspective in the prologue.

Each character had a unique and different back story that very much lends to the plot and is fascinating to learn.

I rate Undertow Three and a Half out of Five!!!

What readers are saying:
WOrkS of FiCTioN – “All in all Undertow is a great book that not only keeps you guessing, but doesn’t let you set it down. I loved the characters and their interactions and definitely hoping for a continuation of their story.”

Reading Diva – “This series takes paranormal somewhere I haven’t been as a reader and I can’t wait to spend more time at the Cape or wherever Eila’s journey takes her. Do I recommend this book? Yes, Yes, Yes, and YES!” (TOP PICK winner)

Book Talks by the Library Lady – “I could not put this one down! Even when I needed to put it down, I had to almost immediately pick it back up. It took mere hours for me to read this entire book and I am truly ticked that Eila's next story won't be published until
July 2014. I don't want to wait for this story to continue! This is an addictive read.”
