Blog Tour: Chasing Forever Down by Nikki Godwin

Chasing Forever Down
(Drenaline Surf #1)
by Nikki Godwin

Date of Publication: March 14, 2013
Genre: contemporary YA romance with sports

Blurb:

After seventeen-year-old Haley Sullivan meets a mysterious stranger who plays by his own rules, she's more than determined to learn every trick of the trade from the master himself. But her dream-chasing mentor disappears after that night, and according to the local newspapers, he's been dead for years. Knowing he's very much alive, Haley enlists best friend Linzi to join her on a scavenger-hunt-style road trip that ultimately lands them in the surf town of Crescent Cove, California. Mystery guy is no mystery here, though – he's Colby Taylor, the west coast's biggest professional surfer.

If Haley wants to talk to the wave rider again, she'll have to get past his four intimidating bodyguards who are highly skilled in the business of sending starstruck fangirls back to where they belong. Haley is up for the challenge if it means chasing her dreams and escaping the perfectly corporate future that's been planned for her. But dealing with these bodyguards isn't exactly what Haley imagined it'd be. Sure, being thrown off a jet ski sucks, but falling in love with one of them might just be worse.

Here is my interview with the awesome Nikki Godwin:

1. What inspired you to write Chasing Forever Down?

CFD is a mixture of a lot of old book ideas that didn't pan out, but what really set the "dead surfer plot" into motion was an episode of the TV show Face Off. The episode was zombie-themed, and one of the makeup artists was planning to design a zombie surfer who had been bitten by a shark. It intrigued me because I'd never given surfers a second thought. No one really writes about surfers. There's no big surf movie franchise. It's not "a thing." So of course, I instantly wanted to make it MY thing and decided I'd someday write about "a dead surfer."

2. Which character was your favourite to write?

A.J. Gonzalez because he's a character who had been in my head for a very long time. He came across perfectly on the page. He was a lot of fun, had the best lines, and really showed the range and depth of a person. However, I also really enjoyed writing the Hooligans. Topher came to me as naturally as A.J. did, although he's much more charismatic than A.J. The funny thing with Topher (and the Hooligans) is that he was intended to be a "one scene character" but his personality was too big.

3. What is a book you would recommend?

Because this is a beachy book, I have to mention Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler. It's a traditionally published novel, but it's one of my top favorites. I think it'd appeal to anyone who liked CFD. Also, Solving for Ex by Leigh Ann Kopans is a great contemporary YA novel that releases in February, so I think all YA contemporary lovers should watch out for it!

4. What was the most difficult part of Chasing Forever Down to write?

The story itself wasn't actually difficult to write but finding time to write it was. I was working a day job at the time that required 11 hours of my day (including the commute), and I had an "after hours" phone for at least half the month every month (non-consecutively). It was physically, mentally, and emotionally draining, and that all took a toll on my writing. It took me a year to finish CFD, and had it been any other book, I'd have probably quit writing. Luckily this was the book that my heart wanted to write, so we made it happen.

5. Do you have any writing habits or quirks?

Almost all of my books are written in my bedroom, while sitting on my bed. I usually always have Mountain Dew on hand, and sometimes I burn candles. I have to have a detailed outline and chapter-by-chapter playlist before I can write. I can't wing it with a book. I need to know everything beforehand. The playlist is basically just for inspiration and getting me in the right mindset to write.

6. What can we look forward to seeing in the future from the Drenaline Surf gang?

Book 2, Rough Waters, is set for release later this spring. A few teasers: Someone from CFD leaves the cove, unexpectedly and without explanation. Someone nearly dies. Someone gets arrested. Drenaline Surf signs two new surfers. And there are some new romances!

Thank you so much to Nikki for answering my questions.
Her novel Chasing Forever Down is absolutely amazing, one of my absolute favourite Contemporary novels, so I strongly encourage you to read it if you haven't, and to reread it if you have :)

Punk rock band Mutilated Arteries has been seventeen-year-old Becca's world (aka obsession) for the last year. When the band schedules a concert in her hometown, she and her best friend Carli are the first ones in line to buy tickets. The night is everything she expects it to be and more, especially after making friends with the new super-cute bassist, Sketch.

Becca's mom warns her not to fall for a rock star because rock stars are always on the road - or they die in a plane crash, like her mom's favorite band did twenty-something years ago. But after the band's tour bus breaks down and they're stuck hanging out in Roizen Hills for a week, it's hard for Becca not to fall for Sketch and his caricature drawings and toxic green eyes.

Becca knows Sketch is leaving as soon as the bus is fixed, and she can't be his fan-turned-girlfriend anyway because of the lead singer's "No Girlfriends" rule. Plus, there's something strange about the guys that Becca can't quite decipher... like how they won't reveal their real names, their always-changing odd appearances, and the guitarist's obsession with blood and zombies. Still, Becca wants nothing more than for Sketch to mutilate her heart...but it just might not be in a way she expects.

Excerpt -
I run out the door and climb into the passenger seat of Carli’s car. “Undead Masquerade” bleeds through the speakers, and the bass thumps against my flip flops. I really hope she turns their CD off before Sketch and Corpse get into her car with us.

She doesn’t say anything as she backs out of my driveway. She has a completely calm persona on her face. We remain silent through the rest of the song, and then she turns the volume down.

“Are you freaking out? I’m freaking out,” she says in one breath.
If she’s freaking out, I have to stay calm. It’s our code. One of us has to act normal to try to hide the other’s complete spazzing moments.

“I’m good. Nervous. But good,” I reply.
She nods her head. “Okay, good. We’ve got this.”

She pushes the eject button on the CD player and shoves the disc back into its case. Thank God. After the ringtone incident yesterday, I do not need anything else that will make me look like a fangirl.

It only takes one drive around the mall for us to find the guys’ dead tour bus. Sketch and Corpse spot us, look once behind them, and run toward our car. Carli slams on the brakes, and my seatbelt catches me from landing face first against the dashboard.

Sketch yanks my door open.
“Let us in!” he shouts. “Hurry!”

I jump out, and he yanks the seat down and dives into the backseat. Corpse jumps in right after him, and the two collapse half on top of the seat and half in the floorboard.
“Get in!” they scream in unison.

I get in quickly and slam the door shut behind me.
“Drive!” Corpse yells, slamming his hands against the back of Carli’s seat.

My Interview with Emily:

1. What inspired you to write Mutilate My Heart as a contemporary read with paranormal elements?
When I was about fourteen I read a kids book that touched on the certain paranormal creatures I wrote about, and I wondered what it would be like if the element came to the real world, but I wanted to make them a bit different than what people are used to seeing about them.

2. Who is your favourite boy in Mutilated Arteries?
My favorite would definitely have to be Nightmare. I really plan to dig into him a lot more in the third Mutilated book.

3. What song have you been listening to most recently?
"Unconditionally" by Katy Perry

4. What is a book you would recommend?
If you're more of a contemporary reader, I'd say read my sister Nikki Godwin's book Chasing Forever Down. If you like paranormal, Reap by Christina Channelle is really good.

5. Which guy or girl in Mutilate My Heart do you think has the best fashion sense?
Sketch is probably the most stylish in the story.

6. Will a certain mystery of "how?” concerning the Mutilated boys be revealed?
Banshee's girlfriend Nadia and Becca find out the "how" near the end of the second book :)

7. What can we look forward to seeing from the Mutilated gang next?
Becca and Carli go on tour with the Mutilated guys along with Nadia. The girls go on a mission to discover the "how" about the guys, and one of the girls will not make it out of the tour alive.

Thanks so much to Emily for answering my questions!
If you haven't read Mutilate My Heart yet then I seriously urged you to go buy it now - it's amazing, I loved it and I am now dying even more so to read Book Two: Mutilated Time.

Description:
What does it feel like when you die—in those final moments? Do you feel the physical pain, or just the pain of your regrets? What does it feel like when you realize you can’t answer these questions because you’re not the victim?

You’re the killer.

River Daniels lives an ordinary life as a high school junior growing up in the confines of rural Texas until her boyfriend’s brutal attack leaves her both a murderer and a fugitive.

When River’s closest girlfriends come to her aid, they make a hasty decision to not only help her, but leave their own troubled lives behind and join in her escape. The girls manage to elude police for months, but with every near-miss, River’s life spirals further out of control, until she finally hits rock bottom. Realizing she must stop endangering her friends and find evidence proving she acted in self-defense, the girls decide to make a risky move.

River must face her ugly past and the one person she was protecting the night her world caved in, the guy she has loved for as long as she can remember.

Interview with Colette Ballard

Did you know the story-line for Running On Empty from day one, or did you come up with it as you came along?

As cliché as this sounds…I had a dream (not the Martin Luther King Jr. kind.) Nope, the kind that was so vivid I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Teenage girls were on the run and it was so intense and upsetting, I had to know what they were running from. The main character killing her boyfriend is what my demented brain came up with.
I spent several years daydreaming and writing this story in my head until I finally decided to go for it. It took a couple years, mistakes, drafts, and a number of inner tantrums before it ever resembled an actual novel.

What trait dis you feel was most important to write into River's character?
She’s tough and stubborn due to life experiences, but she’s also kind, caring, and loyal.

Which character was your favourite to write?

Besides River, I really enjoyed writing Kat. She’s very blunt, sarcastic, and basically she’s just a badass. :)

What is your favourite novel, and why does it appeal to you?

Easy: The Outsiders. I loved this book as a teen because of its honesty; these were the kids with the tough breaks who were incredibly, heartbreakingly real. The “voices” of these characters were distinct and raw, and simply amazing. My original paperback still sits on my shelf for inspiration, and I often pick it up and start reading anywhere.

Do you have any writing habits or quirks?

I often write out of sequence. I write what comes to me before I lose it, or if I get stuck on something, I just skip to what I “see”. When I try to force it, it usually leads to failure. It would probably be much easier if I wrote in order, but my brain doesn’t do easy very well.

What kind of research did you do whilst writing Running On Empty?

I did a lot of research about the legal system—thanks to an amazing friend. She also took me on an amazing behind-the-scenes field trip involving lawyers, metal bars, and the color orange.

What was the most difficult part of Running On Empty for you to write?

Besides the tons of drafts, I would say finding the right balance between River and her boyfriend. He was very manipulative, and she was naïve and looking for an escape from her world.

How does it feel knowing you book will be released into the world?

Surreal and exciting and very, very scary!!!

Thank you so much to Colette for answering my questions and to Sherry for allowing me to be a part of the blog tour!

I am so excited for Running On Empty to be released, it looks and sounds SO incredibly amazing!
