I absolutely had to read Daughter of Isis when I heard about it: mythology, seeming romance; what's not to like about that in a story?
Suffice to say, throw your assumption on what the story will be like out the window: you will never be able to guess what the story is really like!
Natti grew up in England and loved her life there, so she was very reluctant to more to Setemple, California - a town in the desert that is fond of all things Egyptian - even after her grandmother was murdered in England. Natti meets Seth when she starts Setemple High School, and she's not really sure what to think.
Seth is part of the Sons of Set order: a group who orship The god of Chaos and uphold his values. Seth was gifted by Set with an ability to charm people, and this charm has always worked: until he met Natti.
Both Natti and Seth are risking everything as Seth tries to entice Natti, and Natti tries to figure everything out.
Natti is a very strong character: strongly written and in possession of good, strong morals, which I love in a character. She is resilient and defiant, going with her instincts.
Seth is less likable, much less likable. He is more than a bit of a man-whore and has some questionable ideals that he tries to live up to, however, he does start to redeem himself towards the end of the novel.
The other characters are well-written, with the "bad guys" being genuinely creepy and hateful - I honestly don't think I have ever read a group of characters that I've thought to be less redeemable and less hate-worthy of hate than these guys.
The plot is moved along with mystery and intrigue over what the characters will choose to do next, how they will behave. There is an intensity to he story, and action (just, not the kind of action that you may think.
An enjoyable read with an ending that leaves you kind of going "Huh?!" and pondering the fairness of life (to me the ending was very much a possible cliff-hanger - there is so much unanswered!). I will definitely check out book two since I have to find out more, this book is definitely upper young adult, with some more mature content.
I rate Daughter of Isis Four out of Five!!!
