A terrible mistake haunts college student Olivia Spencer. To escape the past, she travels to the Mediterranean island of Crete, hoping for the courage to start anew.

By the sea, she meets sexy and enigmatic Kai. But there’s more to Kai than meets the eye — and nobody wants to talk about it. The locals shun him, accusing him of magic. Kai, apparently, belongs to the sea, no matter how crazy that sounds.

Kai isn’t free to be with her or live his own life, and this is how he will stay, unless Olivia can break his curse and save him — in doing so atoning for those she failed in the past.

NEW ADULT ROMANCE. Contains mature content. Ages 17+

AZURE (Drowning In You) is a stand-alone novel. No cliffhanger.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The only New Adult novels I have read have been solely contemporary reads, so Azure was a very different New Adult experience, and the best I could have had branching into paranormal New Adult!

Olivia is vacationing in Crete with her friends Kirsten and Markus, and basically trying to forget her past for a while. Crete seems like an amazing escape: sunshine, gorgeous beaches, and an even more gorgeous boy, Kai.

Kai is different and gorgeous but feared and and prejudiced against by the locals, who accuse him of something that seems impossible to Olivia - magic.

Olivia is determined to learn the truth about Kai, what happened in his past to make him the way he is, why he is accused of magic and who he really is.
One answer she receives is that Kai belongs to the sea, he is cursed, and he can never be free so long as the curse is in place - Kai needs saving and Olivia has her mind set on being the one to do it, but will she be able to make up for a tragic mistake from her past?

Olivia is low on self-confidence, but full of determination, she is flawed and scared, however she doesn't let her fears or her flaws determine how she will act. Despite taking a long while to accept somethings - especially about herself - she does her best to accept others for how they really are and do what she can to make them happy.

Kai is mysterious and has so much going on, he is hot and cold at times in behaviour, but constantly smoldering in the looks department. Mystery, tragedy and seemingly magical binding surround him. He really is adorable in the way he treats Olivia when he's being himself - seriously, I want one of him for myself - he will have a smile stuck on your face as you swoon.

The magic in Azure straddles the line between being crazy superstition and real magic, written in a way that  keeps you wondering and curious. The characters have, each, a lot of hurdles in their paths, both magical and real. This novel contains tragedy, secrets, revelations, love and acceptance.

Olivia and Kai's relationship is full of overcoming obstacles, learning hard truths and accepting another person's flaws, their past and their true self.
Readers will be very happy indeed with the level of sexiness to be found in Azure, scorching hot but always tempered realistically with character reactions and conversations.

Chrystalla Thoma en-captures the magic that the ocean can hold as well as the magic of love, while writing in all different kinds of relationships people may have. I really admired the way Kirsten treated Olivia.
I love, love, love, LOVED the ending, it was seriously the most perfect way this novel could have ended.

Such an interesting novel, full of intrigue, mystery and magic, Azure is captivating - completely and utterly!

I rate Azure Five out of Five!!!

Interview with Amber Skye Forbes - author of When Stars Die

When Stars Die by Amber Skye Forbes

Amelia Gareth's brother is a witch and the only way to save her family from the taint in his blood is to become a professed nun at Cathedral Reims. However, in order to become professed, she must endure trials that all nuns must face.

Surviving these trials is not easy, especially for Amelia, who is being stalked by shadowy beings only she can see. They're searching for people they can physically touch, because only those they can touch can see them. Amelia soon learns why she is being stalked when she accidentally harms her best friend with fire during the third trial. Fire is a witch's signature. The shadows are after witches.

Now Amelia must decide what to do: should she continue on her path to profession knowing there is no redemption, or should she give up on her dream and turn away from Cathedral Reims in order to stop the shadows who plan to destroy everything she loves?

1. What inspired you to write When Stars Die?

There wasn't a whole lot that inspired When Stars Die. While I have answered this question in many forms, I have had to think over time what truly inspired this novel. I suppose this novel was borne of the sequel, The Stars Are Infinite. The protagonist, Amelia, was originally a cutthroat assassin in The Stars Are Infinite, and I had her so developed as an antagonist that I became very intrigued by her backstory and wanted to create a prequel to explain why she became that cutthroat person that exists in The Stars Are Infinite.

However, I am not fond of prequels because we already know what happens to the characters that exist in prequels, so I don't believe prequels will ever be able to beat the books that follow it, and when I write a series, I want each book to be better than the previous book. So I changed everything entirely and decided to make When Stars Die the first book, creating a more complex character out of Amelia who is drastically different in The Stars Are Infinite than she was originally going to be. No longer is she some sort of assassin. In fact, she is a very broken individual in TSAI because of the things that happen in When Stars Die.

Also, TSAI  contained too much information that I knew would lose the readers, and I realized that When Stars Die could better break up this information than TSAI could. So I knew that When Stars Die indeed had to be the first book. Now TSAI still contains all of this information, but it should be much less confusing for readers who have already read When Stars Die.

So, essentially, When Stars Die was inspired by TSAI.

2. What characteristics do you feel are essential in a main character?

I feel like main characters actually need to develop in the book, more so than the secondary characters. Especially in YA, teen characters have a tendency to dramatically develop because teens are emotional beings in the first place that are more affected by certain events than adults are. So dramatic character development in teen novels is something I feel is essential in a main character.

Amelia starts out as this determined individual who wants to become a nun in order to save her family from the taint of witchcraft, but then she becomes indecisive when she removed from Cathedral Reims, as the Mother Superior believes she is not ready to endure what it takes to be a nun. Amelia moves back and forth between wanting to go back and fulfilling her father's wishes, which is to marry into a rich family able to provide for all her needs--because women were considered too weak to fend for themselves in the 19th century. Then as the end draws near, Amelia becomes a broken individual, who then has to pull herself together. She then becomes ruthless at the end and does what she knows must be done in order to save everything she loves. And in the last chapter, she is dramatically different from who she was in the beginning of the book.

3. What is a book you would recommend?

One book I could recommend is The Fault in Our Stars because it is not a typical cancer book where the sufferer with cancer is lauded as some sort of hero. TFiOS basically says that people with cancer are not heroes. They are simply teens with cancer who are trying to live their lives while dealing with such a serious illness. TFiOS also presents the realities of cancer that other cancer books don't focus on so much because they're too busy trying to make this character some happy-go-lucky person able to endure cancer and come out as a hero, representing all cancer patients, as though they should all be heroes and should be just as strong, when, really, cancer is an illness that can sap everything out of you.

4. Which character was your favourite to write?

Amelia was my favorite to write because of her indecisiveness and her very emotional outlook on the world. Some good reviews have stated that Amelia seems younger than her actual age, which is eighteen, but everyone is different. And, really, what is "acting your age?" Again, all individuals are different. I am twenty-three and still feel very much like Amelia because I am simply a sensitive individual. Sensitive individuals have a very different outlook on the world and tend to react more strongly to bad things that happen to them, even if it seems childish to people. I have bipolar disorder, and while I am stable, depression tends to "reduce me to a child," so to speak, because I need special help that non-sufferes my age don't need. But in spite of some reviews claiming she acts younger than her actual age, Amelia is doing a lot of things that many teens her age would never do or even experience. She does what needs to get done, and she does it in the way she thinks it needs to be done.

Also, readers need to consider that Amelia has lived in a very limited world, and thus, has very little life experience. She at first lived at home with her parents, venturing little outside her house, and then she lived in the convent, governed by strict rules that also prevented her from venturing into the outside world to gain a different perspective on the world.

5. Is there a specific place where you go to write?

I write in some of my classes, because some teachers seem to believe I'm taking notes. With one EDUC class, I don't even have to pay attention anymore because the final assignment is an essay, and I am very good with essays. Another class is geography, and if I were to pay attention to lecture in that class, I would stab out my eyeballs. Plus, the teacher puts all lecture slides online, gives out study guides, and the tests are based on those study guides, which can be easily answered by the lecture slides.

6. Describe yourself in five words

Determined, sensitive, kind, artistic, quirky.

7. Describe your book in one sentence.

Amelia is being stalked by shadowy beings for her power of witchcraft, and she must do everything she can to evade these shadows, as they want her power for reasons that could destroy everything she loves.

8. How did you feel when your novel When Stars Die was published?

Originally I thought it was going to feel like any other day because it was already available for pre-order; however, people could buy it using Prime and get it two days later, so it was technically "out" already. But then the actual launch day came, and I was on cloud nine because a book blitz was going on, garnering large exposure for my book, my publisher sent out a press released that gained an insane amount of views, and I also had a book launch party I won from Lady Amber, and this was a three hour one where there was no lull in conversation or activities. When I checked by Goodread adds the next day, I discovered 84 people had added it that day, and the Goodread adds continues from being 10-20 per day, meaning people were really discovering my book, and that felt pretty good to me. I am still sort of on cloud nine because now that I am an author I feel like I have more of an excuse to do library and school visits. In fact, I have my first library visit in January, and a school visit some time in February. I also contacted a creative writing teacher who would love to have me, but she has to have administration approval first. If everything goes well, there is a possibility that I could be recommended to other schools.

Plus, the e-book will be being released in December, so, essentially, When Stars Die will be put back in the spotlight again, with book blitzes and another surprise that I can't mention. And I will make sure it stays in the spotlight by continuously doing reviews, seeking school visits, presentations, interviews on online radios (and perhaps local stations), and ect. I am a very creative person and know what to do to get my book out there.

9. What can readers expect in the future?

Readers can expect that The Stars Are Infinite will hopefully blow When Stars Die out of the water. I have been taking advice from some reviewers on what I can do to improve TSAI, and I am able to implement that advice without completely tearing TSAI apart. In fact, some of the advice really made me re-consider the ending, so I am giving that one a good tear. They can also hopefully expect a contemporary fantasy in the future as well, as well as the third book in The Stars Trilogy, A Collision of Stars.

Lost in a world full of monstrous fairies, a troubled sixteen year old has to find out who she is and why her memories were stolen before she is found by those who want her dead.

She takes the name "Memory" and knows she has just one goal - to find her way home, wherever that is. But this land is strange. No technology to be seen, and iron is banned, thanks to a pact the humans have with the magical creatures who share their pre-industrial era world. In her t-shirt and torn jeans, Memory knows she's different, even before she performs impossible magic.

Haunted by her past, chased by a dragon, wanted by the king and stalked by the strange, handsome savage that seems to know her, everyone is after Memory, and she suspects it's not just for her eye-catching outfit. Her forgotten past holds dangerous secrets that will challenge everything she believes and risk the lives of everyone she loves.

Memory's Wake contains over 45 illustrations by the author and artist.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really love the cover for Memory's Wake, it's amazing, as is all the artwork included within the novels pages.

A girl awakes on a forest floor with no memory at all of who she is, what her past consisted of, or how she ended up where she is. Ironically taking the name 'Memory', she finds herself lost in a world where phones do not exist, but magic is very real. Chased by hunters, a dragon, and followed by a savage, she has to stay off the King's radar as she follows Eloryn, the only somewhat friendly face she meets, on a journey.

Memory wants to remember who she is and how she came to be this way, whilst eluding her enemies...

Memory is an interesting character, with no memory she has to figure out what kind of person she is through how she reacts to everything she is confronted with which isn't easy, she's naturally mistrustful of people and a little bit cynical.
Eloryn, in contrast, is very innocent and has led a relatively easy life and seems to be treasured by those she and Memory meet. Roen is brave, good and hopeful, and determined in his roles.

Memory's Wake is told from several view points that fill you, intermittently, in with the different characters feeling and perspective, which gives you greater insight whilst also shrouding the thoughts, actions and words of the other characters in mystery.

Memory's Wake is definitely a very visual novel, not only are there very gorgeous illustrations dispersed throughout, which really help you to see the characters as they are supposed to be seen, the writing style is full of beautifully descriptive language so that even on the pages where there are no illustrations, you can still picture in your mind what is happening.

I feel really sorry for Memory, she's always left at least slightly in the dark, and never seems to be really, truly appreciated by any of the other characters. I really did not like the fae, their actions really irritated me.
You never quite know what is around the corner or exactly how everything is going to tie in together, keeping you wondering.

Abundant with mystery and magic, there are also plenty of action scenes within Memory's Wake as well, along with intrigue, deceit, betrayals, shocking revelations and more.
Most definitely a very intriguing novel that is both beautifully written and beautifully illustrated, not to mention enjoyable.

I rate Memory's Wake Four out of Five!!!

(Description source: Goodreads)

OBSESSED with her job as a medical examiner and lead consultant with the FBI, Dr. Vivienne 'Vivi' DeMarco is a woman running from her own demons. And finding the remains of a body on the side of a road in rural upstate New York wasn't part of her plan.

FRUSTRATED that the ghosts from his past won't leave him alone, Ian MacAllister makes for a reluctant Deputy Chief of Police of Windsor, New York. But as more victims are discovered, all women that bear a shocking resemblance to Dr. DeMarco, he knows he'll need to call on all the skills he learned as an Army Ranger if he wants to keep her safe.

DENIED over and over again of the one thing he desires most, a killer may have finally reached his breaking point. The only question that remains is, will he take Vivi and Ian with him?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I read the description for A Tainted Mind I was really intrigued, despite watching a lot of crime shows on t.v., I haven't really read all that many which is the other part of the reason why I had to pick up A Tainted Mind.

Vivi is just trying to get away, and with no destination in mind, she's just thinking of passing through Windsor. Things don't go according to plan, however. Changing a tire in the rain and hearing a strange noise leads Vivi to a tragic discovery.

Ian MacAllister is reluctant in his job with the Windsor Police, has his own demons much like Vivi and hates to acknowledge them, but he is fully committed to finding this murderer, especially as more and more victims are discovered.

Each and every victim bears an eery resemblance to Vivi  and everything is reaching a fever pitch, especially for the killer - which could have the most devastating results...

A Tainted Mind is told from both Ian and Vivi's view-points.
Vivi is strong, independent, compassioante and incredibly smart, but not without her vulnerabilities. Ian has issues that he finds hard to let go of and somewhat let's it colour how he views himself, however he is strong, honourable and insightful.
The way Vivi and Ian related to one another, it was easy to see the connection between the two, the interactions weren't over-the-top, they were realistic and completely enthralling, some of my very favourite scenes.

I loved the twins characters, they were hilarious and totally, ironically, unique. I really liked Nick's character, despite being sarcastic, to me he was also very self-deprecating. The dynamics of Vivi's family, Ian's co-workers and the Windsor community were amazingly written, and I immensely enjoyed reading this story, especially for this fact. I also loved how Tamsen realistically wrote Post Traumatic Stress Disorder into the story in a believable way that at the same time as adding to the story, also educated the reader.

While the story-line was intense and well-paced, elements of it were slightly predictable - I guessed correctly who the murderer was at the earliest possible moment that I could, however, this in no way detracted from my reading experience. The story is believable and really immerses you, and something that you absolutely HAVE to see through to the conclusion.

This book really does deliver: action, suspense, mystery, romance and discovery.

I rate A Tainted Mind Four out of Five!!!

Excerpt

“You gotta be kidding me.” Ian crossed his arms and stared at the board. The newly updated board of death. They’d started with eighteen women, three confirmed dead and the other fifteen missing. The last time Ian had looked at the board, Carly had eliminated five of the victims, bringing the number down to thirteen women who fit the profile.

This board had twenty-one women on it. Girls, some of them. And went back over fifteen years.
“There were a few earlier than this woman, or, uh, girl,” Carly corrected herself, pointing to the first picture on the board. Amanda Corlis, seventeen, found raped, strangled, and murdered in a summer resort town in southern Maine. She was probably getting ready to go to college. “But they only had one or two similarities so I didn’t include them,” she added.

“Shit.” Ian ran his good hand over his face. “So, how many of these women are missing and how many confirmed dead?” Ian couldn’t believe he was hearing those words out of his mouth. This wasn’t Afghanistan, asking for “confirmed dead,” while standing here in his small, quiet town was more than surreal. “Ten in total are confirmed dead. The remaining eleven are missing, presumed dead,” Marcus answered. His voice sounded about how Ian felt.

“And do we have the files?” Vivienne asked.
Carly nodded. “I was able to track down everyone I needed yesterday, and we have all but one, but that one should be here today.” They all stared at the board for a long, silent moment. Ian thought about turning to Vivienne and asking that she call in the Bureau. But as he studied the board, a pattern emerged in his mind. A plan.
“We need timelines,” Ian said.

His officers looked at him with a combination of curiosity and eagerness in their expressions. Vivienne’s face said something more along the lines of “you know what we need to do, now tell us.” That she didn’t bother to hide that little bit of “I told you so” brought a faint smile to his lips. A couple of timelines. Of the women we know are dead, we need to know when they went missing and the estimated times of death,” Ian continued.

“To get an idea of how long he holds them,” Marcus interjected, speaking more to himself than anyone else.
“But we also need to know more about where they were last seen. If they were seen at a bar on Friday night and reported missing on Saturday, we’ll have a more reliable sense of when the clock started ticking for them,” Ian kept talking.

“But if they went missing from somewhere where it’s harder to lock down a time, like if they went camping by themselves or something like that, then we need to take that into consideration,” Carly added, catching on.
Ian nodded. “We also need to know where they went missing from and where the bodies were found. If there is any pattern there, it might give us an idea of how far he takes them from the grab sites. And it might also help us know where to look for the other women, depending on what we find.” Both Carly and Marcus moved into action—pulling up their computers, calling off dates and locations, examining the files.
“Ian?” Vivienne’s voice held a note of concern.

He swiveled his eyes from his officers to Vivienne. He could tell by the look on her face that she’d seen the same pattern on the board he had. He gave an almost imperceptible nod.

“And folks, I hate to say this, but I think we need to work fast,” Ian added. Both heads shot up. “When he started his spree, he went after about one woman a year for several years,” Ian continued. “But in recent years, his attacks have been getting closer and closer together. If all these women really are his victims, a few years ago he went after two a year. Then there were the three in Boston, all in one year. After that, it looks like there might have been a short break for some reason, but he picked up again a little less than a year ago, and since then he’s already gone after two, with Rebecca being the most recent.”
“What does that mean? Other than the obvious, I mean,” Marcus asked.

“It means that he is devolving,” Vivienne answered. “Whatever it is that’s driving him is becoming more and more of an obsession. To the extent he’s losing control over it.”
