She lives in the best suburb. She goes to the finest school. Her family is wealthy and powerful. She has everything money can buy.

So why are there reporters outside her house?
And why is her father telling lies on television?
And why is the Premier talking about them in State Parliament?

Something is wrong. Something is terribly wrong.
Riveting and compulsively readable, John Marsden's Checkers plunges us deep in the mind and world of a teenage girl whose life has spun completely out of control.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Checkers  is the emotional, heart-wrenching story of a teenage girl who, in the space of a few hours, gets her life thrown upside down and learns that no one in life can really be trusted.

Written in the form of diary flashbacks, Checkers introduces us to a girl who voluntarily checked in to a nearby psychiatric ward but refuses to talk about what helped her to make her mind to be there.

In flashbacks we get to experience her life before the Psychiatric ward, featuring her dysfunctional and uncommunicative family of four as life for them spirals out of their control. Checkers, the dog that her father buys for her is a beacon of light for the unnamed girl when her father comes under attack from the media due to being under suspicion for fraudulent activities within his co-owned business.

When a connection ties Checkers to the fraud case, the situation worsens and everything takes a turn for the worse. A turn that makes everything change forever.

Checkers was a gripping book that had me emotionally entranced from the opening chapter.  Like many of Marsden's other novels, Checkers takes on a different writing style, which does take some getting used to , but personally I found it to be quite interesting and effective for this storyline.

It helps to express how the main character feels and what she is thinking, which gives more dimension to the plot line and encourages more empathy towards her.
The ending to Checkers is gripping and really gives the story an individual spin, showing that Marsden is not afraid to take things all the way and he really goes off on a limb ending things the way that he does.

This is an enjoyable, emotional novel that is worth reading and doesn't take much time at all.

"It’s a miracle anyone survives to be a teenager. It’s a miracle any teenager survives to be an adult."

I rate Checkers Four out of Five!

Welcome to Manderley Academy. I hadn't wanted to go, but my parents were so excited…. So here I am, the new girl at Manderley, a true fish out of water. But mine's not the name on everyone's lips. Oh, no.

It's Becca Normandy they can't stop talking about. Perfect, beautiful Becca. She went missing at the end of last year, leaving a spot open at Manderley—the spot that I got. And everyone acts like it's my fault that infallible, beloved Becca is gone and has been replaced by not perfect, completely fallible, unknown Me.

Then, there's the name on my lips—Max Holloway. Becca's ex. The one boy I should avoid, but can't. Thing is, it seems like he wants me, too. But the memory of Becca is always between us. And as much as I'm starting to like it at Manderley, I can't help but think she's out there, somewhere, watching me take her place.

Waiting to take it back.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Girl is an intriguing read, the cover and the description work so well in drawing your interest and pulling you in. I ended up impulse buying New Girl at a sale and just got stuck into it.

The novel starts out by giving us a background on the main character and how it came about that her parents were so excited to send her off to Manderley, she agrees to go to please them and because it is a new opportunity to branch out and learn new things, she thinks that things at Manderley won't be so bad...

But arriving at Manderley to find herself under the repressing label of New Girls isn't the worst part of her new school experience, why? Because she replaced the school's sweetheart, the one who went missing and it seems that no one is willing to give her a chance or believe that she isn't trying to take Becca's place.

Given a hard time from the outset, the main character is an interesting narrator who tells the story in such a way that she allows you, upon occasion, to really feel some sympathy for her. The real intrigue in this novel come from the second perspective given, Becca's. Becca's point of view is all flashback to the events following her own admission to Manderley and how she changed things up, as well as how things started to do drastically wrong. But is Becca really missing? What happened to her? And is she coming back? Back to take her rightful place?

Written in an easy to enjoy and highly suspenseful manner, this story will keep you wondering exactly what happened to Becca and if she really is just waiting to take back her place at Manderley. There is an overuse of sex in the plot, with some characters getting it on very quickly indeed. Some characters were quite difficult to figure out, one of them being Max, he is described as extremely good looking, but there is a mystery to him that has you wonder at his part in the novel.

The seeming connection between the main character and Becca added a thriller-like aspect to the narrative, and I loved the fact that there was a ploy the author employed that I did almost catch on to about half way through, but kind of wrote it off until it was revealed at the end. This novel is kind of gritty, full of a huge variety of characters, each with their own emotions and motive, as well as secrets, making this novel quite enjoyable.

“There was no up, there was no down."

There are six things very wrong with my life:

1. I have one of those under-the-skin spots that will never come to a head but lurk in a red way for the next two years.

2. It is on my nose

3. I have a three-year-old sister who may have peed somewhere in my room.

4. In fourteen days the summer hols will be over and then it will be back to Stalag 14 and Oberfuhrer Frau Simpson and her bunch of sadistic teachers.

5. I am very ugly and need to go into an ugly home.

6. I went to a party dressed as a stuffed olive.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Look, I can't go out with you, because...because...because I'm a lesbian.”

Angus, Thongs and the full-frontal snogging was a novel that I recall my friends many years ago raving about and trying to get me to read. Having finally caught up I can say that I regret not reading them back when I was in my early teens because the humour and style mimicks that of a 14 year old girl perfectly!

We are drawn into the life of Georgia Nicolson through her diary and get to experience everything that happens along with her. Her crazy family and friends that all drive her wild at times as well as the highs and lows of both boys and dating. Along with her wicked sense of humour that often kept me laughing for pages on end she looks at everything exactly the way that most 14 year old girls do.

When sex-god Robbie arrives the comedy really sets in with her small comments and snide remarks about things that drive her bonkers. Georgia eventually decides that Robbie will be hers soon and devises a fool-proof plan that will certainly land her Robbie. But family and friends can really get in the way sometimes.

Overall I enjoyed Angus, Thongs and the full-frontal snogging a lot and found it to be quite funny, it certainly had its moments though. I can see how easily other girls in their early teen would find this novel to relate to and the messages and lessons that Georgia learns throughout it can be very valuable indeed.

To me Georgia was an irritating character, being not only vain and incredulously self-centred but also demanding, high maintenance and hormonal. By the time I was nearing the end I had gotten used to her character and interestingly enough she didn't irritate me to the degree that she had at the beginning.

The plot was not as predictable as I had initially thought and I enjoyed that it took those different turns along the way, so that I could not be entirely sure as to where Georgia would end up in life. It was well paced until about halfway through when it really slowed down until it was almost the end, but lifted its game a but then.
I am looking forward to continuing the series and seeing what else Georgia gets involved in and how much trouble she creates.

“Unbelievable! I said, "What would I be doing walking the streets at night as a stuffed olive- gate-crashing cocktail parties?”

I rate Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging Three out of Five!!!

Synopsis

Some things are worth waiting for…

Traveling thousands of miles from home to enter college is the only way nineteen-year-old Avery Morgansten can escape what happened at the Halloween party five years ago—an event that forever changed her life. All she needs to do is make it to her classes on time, make sure the bracelet on her left wrist stays in place, not draw any attention to herself, and maybe—please God—make a few friends, because surely that would be a nice change of pace. The one thing she didn’t need and never planned on was capturing the attention of the one guy who could shatter the precarious future she’s building for herself.

Some things are worth experiencing…

Cameron Hamilton is six feet and three inches of swoon-worthy hotness, complete with a pair of striking blue eyes and a remarkable ability to make her want things she believed were irrevocably stolen from her. She knows she needs to stay away from him, but Cam is freaking everywhere, with his charm, his witty banter, and that damn dimple that’s just so… so lickable. Getting involved with him is dangerous, but when ignoring the simmering tension that sparks whenever they are around each other becomes impossible, he brings out a side of her she never knew existed.

Some things should never be kept quiet…

But when Avery starts receiving threatening emails and phone calls forcing her to face a past she wants silenced, she’s has no other choice but to acknowledge that someone is refusing to allow her to let go of that night when everything changed. When the devastating truth comes out, will she resurface this time with one less scar? And can Cam be there to help her or will he be dragged down with her?

And some things are worth fighting for…

FINN FINNEGAN by Darby Karchut

Book One in the Adventures of Finn MacCullen series

Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
Number of Pages: 184
Date read: January 3rd, 2013
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Action
Format: Paperback

(Description source: Back of Book Cover)

Finn (not bleedin' Finnegan) MacCullen is eager to begin his apprenticeship. He soon discovers the ups and downs of hunting monsters in a suburban neighborhood under the demanding tutelage of the Knight, Gideon Lir. Both master and apprentice are descendents of the Tuatha De Danaan, a magical race of warriors from Ireland. Scattered long ago to the four corners of the world, the De Danaan wage a two thousand year old clandestine battle with their ancient enemy, the Amandán, a breed of goblin-like creatures.

Now with the beasts concentrating their attacks on Finn, he and his master must race to locate the lost Spear of the Tuatha De Danaan, the only weapon that can destroy the Amandán, all the while hiding his true identity from his new friends, Rafe and Savannah, twins whose South African roots may hold a key to Finn's survival. Armed with a bronze dagger, some ancient Celtic magic, and a hair-trigger temper, Finn is about to show his enemies the true meaning of "fighting Irish."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I dinna write the rules. It clearly states in the ‘How to Train Yer Apprentice’ manual that the apprentice does the laundry.”

The fact that Finn Finnegan is an immensely enjoyable read was obvious simply from reading the first few chapters. One of my favourite things about this novel is the easy-going banter between master and apprentice.

Finn Finnegan decides to take it upon himself to start his apprenticeship slightly early and when Knight Gideon Lir agrees to take him on despite unforeseen circumstances, he has no idea exactly what he's getting himself into. With a temper to match Gideon's, Finn is seriously lacking in manners and restraint.
Training to fight the Amandan, ancient goblin-like foe of the Tuatha De Denaan, Finn is learning new things everyday and trying to make friendships too, but it soon becomes abundantly clear that the Amandan are high in number and becoming an evermore deadly threat.

This book is genuinely surprising in the best way possible. The characters were really compelling in their stubbornness and tempers and their witty dialogue.

Set in modern day, Finn Finnegan is a mix of following ancient traditions while using modern day technology. There are such realistic everyday life things as well as
awesome action-packed fighting sequences. Well rounded characters who each brings piecces of their own story and draw you in to the novel, make this book so incredibly enjoyable.

The plot is so well thought out, there is never a single lulling moment or any kind of hole in the plot, with surprising twists it is so difficult to attempt to guess the ending. This is by no means a difficult read but the story line challenges you to figure out what exactly is going on, you begin to need to know, to need to keep reading till the end!

Purely and simply a fantastic read, I can't wait for book two in The Adventures of Finn MacCullen series!

“Now, the most important thing to remember when battling an Amandan with a blade is to…” He paused, eyebrows raised as he waited for Finn to answer. “Stick it with the sharp end?” The knight blinked. He scratched the back of his neck with the tip of the weapon and tried again. “The second most important thing to remember when battling an Amandan with a blade is to…”

I rate Finn Finnegan Five out of Five!

About three things I was absolutely certain.
First, Edwart was most likely my soul mate, maybe.
Second, there was a vampire part of him--which I assumed was wildly out of his control--that wanted me dead.
And third, I unconditionally, irrevocably, impenetrably, heterogeneously, gynecologically, and disreputably wished he had kissed me.

And thus Belle Goose falls in love with the mysterious and sparkly Edwart Mullen in the Harvard Lampoon’s hilarious send-up of Twilight.

Pale and klutzy, Belle arrives in Switchblade, Oregon looking for adventure, or at least an undead classmate. She soon discovers Edwart, a super-hot computer nerd with zero interest in girls.

After witnessing a number of strange events–Edwart leaves his tater tots untouched at lunch! Edwart saves her from a flying snowball!–Belle has a dramatic revelation: Edwart is a vampire. But how can she convince Edwart to bite her and transform her into his eternal bride, especially when he seems to find girls so repulsive?

Complete with romance, danger, insufficient parental guardianship, creepy stalker-like behavior, and a vampire prom, Nightlight is the uproarious tale of a vampire-obsessed girl, looking for love in all the wrong places

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I had recently come into the possession of a Thesaurus. You would not believe how many words there are! When I opened that book, I was like, whoa! Word party!”

Nightlight is a book that both twilight fans and haters will enjoy.

It follows the original twilight story with a very large, humourous twist.
Every tiny detail of the twilight story has been amplified to the point of being hilarious, from the alternate character names to the vast over exaggeration of the vampires.

Belle's attraction to vampires is beyond comical, to the point that if the book continued on for much longer it would get annoyingly sickening. It is a VERY over the top book to amplify the points of Twilight that people hate and to turn the whole thing into a tastfully done joke.

I found it to be very enjoyable and it is definitely a good book to read for a good laugh and to just sit back and enjoy.

Nightlight is not offensive or dull and it is not a book to be taken seriously or to heart because you can tell that it was written just to poke fun at the Twilight franchise. Yet I will say that it is done in a nice way that is over the top yet still tasteful atleast.

“I was so attracted to him I could have peed myself right there on the spot, but I hadn't done anything like that in a while. I was older now, and harnessed my feelings in moments like these by opening and closing my fists very rapidly.”
